Freshness, fruit, and Atlantic elegance

Mencía is a traditional red grape variety from the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, with a particularly significant presence in Ribeira Sacra, Valdeorras, Monterrei, and El Bierzo. It also appears in northern Portugal, where it is part of the Atlantic wine identity.

For years, it was thought to be related to Cabernet Franc, but genetic studies confirmed that Mencía is its own variety, deeply linked to Galicia and El Bierzo. Its history dates back centuries and is an essential part of the viticultural landscape of the northwest.

Like many European varieties, Mencía suffered the impact of phylloxera at the end of the 19th century. Its recovery was possible thanks to the work of winegrowers who preserved old vines, replanted plots, and kept alive a grape that today once again occupies a prominent place among great Spanish red wines.

In Ribeira Sacra, Mencía expresses itself in a heroic viticulture environment, with vineyards on steep slopes next to the Miño and Sil rivers. There, it usually produces fresh, light, floral, and very gastronomic wines, with notes of cherry, raspberry, soft herbs, and a marked mineral sensation.

In El Bierzo, Mencía shows another facet: wines with red fruit, freshness, depth, and a more earthy or spicy background, especially when it comes from old vines and clay, slate, or sand soils.

In the glass, Mencía usually offers a medium body, lively acidity, and moderate tannins. Its aromas recall red fruits, plum, violets, black pepper, and, in some cases, mineral or balsamic notes. It is an ideal variety for those looking for fresh, elegant red wines with great gastronomic versatility.

At VinNatura, we are interested in Mencía for its balance between tradition and modernity. It is a grape that allows us to discover a red Galicia and a fresh, expressive, and nuanced Bierzo, with wines perfect for pairing with white meats, mushrooms, stews, cheeses, empanadas, fatty fish, and seasonal cuisine.
