José Antonio García - Organic Wines in El Bierzo

José Antonio García is an exceptional winemaker from the Bierzo region of Castilla y León. His winery, which he founded in 2010, has deep family roots. After a successful career in catering in Barcelona, José Antonio decided to return to Bierzo to revitalize the vineyards he inherited from his grandparents in Valtuille de Abajo and Corullón, two of the most prestigious wine regions in the region.

Valtuille is a small village with just 70 inhabitants, surrounded by the highest density of old vineyards in the world. Imagine almost 400 hectares in a single piece, forming a veritable sea of green on the slopes of Valtuille. Together with his wife, Julia Peña, José Antonio has worked tirelessly to transform these vineyards into a model of organic, low-intervention viticulture.

José Antonio García's winery stands out for its artisanal approach and respect for the environment. Its vineyards cover around 25 hectares, all cultivated organically and in the process of converting to organic. Here, native varieties such as Mencía, Godello, Alicante Bouchet, Merenzao, Palomino and Doña Blanca are grown, in soils ranging from clay to decomposed slate.

All work in the vineyard and winery is done by hand, from the harvest to the foot pressing, following traditional methods that respect the integrity of the terroir. Fermentation is carried out with native yeasts and without temperature control, allowing the wines to purely express the characteristics of their origin.

Among the winery's standout wines is "Un culín", a fresh, mineral wine that represents a return to Bierzo's winemaking roots, moving away from heavier international styles. Another notable wine is "Julia", a tribute to his wife, made from a blend of Mencía and other local white varieties. These wines have been acclaimed for their elegance and complexity, gaining recognition both nationally and internationally.

Furthermore, the winery has been a pioneer in the recovery of historic vineyards and in the implementation of sustainable practices, contributing to raising the prestige of the DO Bierzo. The dedication and effort of José Antonio and Julia are reflected in each bottle, offering high-quality wines that respect tradition and the environment.
