Heroic Viticulture between the Miño and Sil Rivers

The Ribeira Sacra, in northwest Spain, stretches between the provinces of Lugo and Ourense, following the course of the Miño and Sil rivers. It is one of Galicia's most unique wine regions, known for its landscape of canyons, terraced vineyards, and extreme slopes that make working in the vineyard a true exercise in heroic viticulture.

Its winemaking tradition dates back to Roman times and gained particular importance during the Middle Ages, when monasteries promoted vine cultivation on these slopes. Today, Ribeira Sacra combines history, landscape, and a new generation of producers who work with artisanal sensitivity and respect for the environment.

The area is organized into five subzones, each with its own character:

Amandi, in the Sil canyon, stands out for its steep slopes, slate and granite soils, and wines with character, freshness, and depth.

Chantada, linked to the Miño river, offers wines with a fresh, lively, and gastronomic profile, marked by Atlantic influence and the diversity of its soils.

Quiroga-Bibei, more eastern and continental, combines altitude, thermal amplitude, and slate and granite soils, resulting in wines with structure, tension, and deep nuances.

Ribeiras do Miño presents a milder climate and varied soils, with fresh, mineral wines of great versatility at the table.

Ribeiras do Sil is characterized by its steep slopes and slate soils, offering wines with lively acidity, clean fruit, and marked mineral expression.

Mencía is the most representative red grape variety of Ribeira Sacra, producing fresh, elegant, and aromatic wines, with red fruit, floral notes, and a very gastronomic acidity. Alongside it, we also find varieties such as Brancellao, Merenzao, Sousón, Godello, Loureiro, and Treixadura, which add diversity and richness to the wines of the area.

At VinNatura, we are interested in Ribeira Sacra for its authenticity: small producers, hand-tended vineyards, extreme landscapes, and wines that combine freshness, elegance, and Galician character. A region where every bottle speaks of effort, terroir, and a very special way of understanding wine.
