Intensity, freshness, and Galician character

The Sousón grape is one of Galicia's most emblematic red varieties. It stands out for its deep color, vibrant acidity, and its ability to produce wines with structure, freshness, and great personality. Originally from the Miño valley area, it is also cultivated in northwestern Portugal, where it is known as Vinhão.

In Galicia, Sousón is part of several wine regions and denominations of origin, such as Rías Baixas, Ribeiro, Ribeira Sacra, Valdeorras, and Monterrei. Although for years it has been mainly used in blends to contribute color, freshness, and structure, there is growing interest in elaborations where this variety takes on a more prominent role.

Historically, Sousón has been a highly valued grape for its chromatic intensity and firmness on the palate. In wines, it typically offers notes of black fruits, plum, blackberry, violet flowers, and a fresh background that balances its deeper character. When carefully handled, it can result in lively, Atlantic, and gastronomic reds, with present but elegant tannins.

Wines made with Sousón stand out for their balance between strength and freshness. Its natural acidity makes them especially versatile at the table, pairing very well with meats, stews, spicy dishes, cured cheeses, traditional Galician cuisine, and also more modern proposals with mushrooms, roasted vegetables, or fatty fish.

At VinNatura, we are interested in Sousón for its ability to show another side of Galicia: fresh, expressive reds with their own identity, which move away from the idea of heavy wines and seek a more lively, Atlantic, and gastronomic expression.
