The Malvasia grape is an ancient and versatile variety with a rich history and a notable presence in global viticulture. Originally from the Mediterranean region, its cultivation has spread from Greece to various parts of Europe, including Italy and Spain.

In La Rioja, Malvasia is a popular, but not predominant, variety. This grape is known for producing white wines with an intense aromatic profile and fruity and floral flavours. Malvasia wines usually have notes of apricot, whitecurrant and peach, with a balanced acidity that makes them fresh and pleasant.

Although Malvasia production in La Rioja is limited, it is used to make high-quality white wines, often in blends with other varieties such as Viura. This grape is known for its ability to produce both dry and sweet wines, adapting well to different styles and market needs.

Outside of La Rioja, Malvasia is also grown in regions such as Castilla y León, Comunidad Valenciana, and the Canary Islands, where some of the most distinctive Malvasia wines in the world are produced. In these areas, the grape adapts to diverse terroirs and climates, resulting in a variety of flavor profiles and wine styles.

A prominent winery in La Rioja that works with this variety is Bodegas Mazuela. This winery is committed to preserving and highlighting Malvasía in its wines, contributing to the diversity and richness of the Rioja wine scene.
