Garnacha Tintorera, also known as Alicante Bouschet, is a red grape variety characterized by its colored pulp, which contributes to the production of wines with an intense red color. This variety is a cross between Petit Bouschet and Garnacha and is mainly grown in Spain, France, Portugal, and some regions of America and Australia.
Originally from Spain, Garnacha Tintorera has historically been cultivated in regions such as Aragon, Catalonia, Navarra and La Rioja. It was introduced to other parts of the world, including California, during the 19th century. In Spain, in addition to its presence in the Ribeira Sacra, it is also found in regions such as Almansa, Jumilla and Valencia.
In the Ribeira Sacra, the winery benefits from the region's special microclimate, which combines Atlantic and Mediterranean influences, and from terraced cultivation on the slopes of the Miño and Sil rivers, a method known as heroic viticulture due to the difficulty of the terrain.
Adega Saíñas and Lagar do Vento are two outstanding wineries in this region. Adega Saíñas specialises in artisanal production and meticulously cares for its vineyards to offer high-quality wines, while Lagar do Vento stands out for its commitment to sustainability and regenerative viticulture.
This grape is known for producing high-alcohol wines with balanced acidity and soft tannins. Garnacha Tintorera wines feature notes of black fruits and spices, making them ideal for pairing with red meats and hearty dishes. Although its production is not as common as other varieties, it is still appreciated for its ability to add color and complexity to wines.
