Color, structure, and character

Garnacha Tintorera, also known as Alicante Bouschet, is a very unique red grape variety: unlike most red grapes, it has not only colored skin but also colored flesh. This allows it to impart great chromatic intensity to wines, with deep hues and a very pronounced visual presence.

Its origin lies in the cross between Petit Bouschet and Garnacha, and over time it has spread throughout different areas of Spain, France, Portugal, and other wine-producing countries. In Spain, it is present in regions such as Almansa, Jumilla, Valencia, Galicia, La Rioja, Aragon, and Catalonia, where it has been used both in blends and in winemaking with greater varietal prominence.

In Galicia, Garnacha Tintorera appears in areas such as Ribeira Sacra, where it contributes to fresh, lively, and structured red wines. In this environment of slopes, rivers, and heroic viticulture, it can provide color, black fruit, tension, and depth, without losing the freshness that characterizes many Galician wines.

In the glass, wines with Garnacha Tintorera typically show aromas of blackberry, plum, ripe black fruit, soft spices, and, in some cases, floral or mineral notes. On the palate, it can provide body, intensity, tannin, and a more enveloping sensation, which is why it works very well in blends with fresher or lighter varieties.

It is an especially interesting grape for those seeking red wines with color, personality, and gastronomic versatility. It pairs well with grilled meats, stews, spicy dishes, aged cheeses, mushrooms, traditional Galician cuisine, and dishes with a certain intensity.

At VinNatura, we are interested in Garnacha Tintorera for its ability to bring depth and character to red wines, especially when integrated into small-production projects with artisanal sensibility and respect for the vineyard.
