El Bierzo, located in the province of León in northwestern Spain, is a wine region surrounded by mountains that create a perfect microclimate for viticulture. This unique climate, along with varied soils of slate and clay, gives the region a special ability to produce excellent wines.
The winemaking history of Bierzo dates back to Roman times, but its modern renaissance began with the creation of the Bierzo Denomination of Origin in 1989. Since then, the region has gained renown for its distinctive wines, especially those made from the Mencía variety for reds and Godello for whites. Mencía is particularly famous for producing aromatic, fruity wines with a remarkable ageing capacity.
Among the outstanding winegrowers of El Bierzo are José Antonio García and Raúl Pérez. José Antonio has revived the family vineyards in Valtuille de Abajo, creating wines that reflect the terroir of the area. Meanwhile, Raúl Pérez, an influential figure in Spanish winemaking, has put Valtuille de Abajo on the map with his exceptional wines.
El Bierzo is characterised by a diversity of landscapes and small vineyards, which allows for a great expression of the terroir in each wine. This geographical complexity is reflected in the classification of the wines, which may include the name of the municipality and the place of origin, highlighting the uniqueness of each wine.
Bierzo is also known for its vineyards with centuries-old vines. Between Valtuille and Corullón, on the so-called "golden mile", there is the largest expanse of old vineyards in the world, on a plot of land owned by multiple owners covering 400 hectares.
El Bierzo offers a unique wine experience, with wines that capture the essence of its terroir and the dedication of its producers. At Vinnatura, we invite you to discover and enjoy these premium wines, carefully selected to offer you the best of this fascinating region.
